Telehealth FAQ
Is telehealth as effective as in-person psychiatry?
Yes. Peer-reviewed research consistently shows that telehealth psychiatric care produces outcomes equivalent to in-person care for most conditions, including anxiety, depression, ADHD, and medication management. Neurostry’s telehealth sessions are fully clinical, not a lesser alternative.
Can I receive prescriptions via telehealth?
Yes. Following your telehealth appointment, prescriptions for most psychiatric medications can be sent directly to your preferred pharmacy electronically. Some controlled substances may require specific compliance with state telehealth prescribing laws; your doctor will explain any relevant requirements.
What states does Neurostry serve via telehealth?
Neurostry is currently licensed to serve patients. We are actively expanding to additional states. Please contact our office to confirm your state’s eligibility before booking.
Does insurance cover telehealth psychiatric appointments?
Most insurance plans that cover in-person psychiatry also cover telehealth, especially following the expansion of telehealth parity laws. We recommend verifying your specific benefits before your appointment. Our office can assist with this process.
- Got Questions?
Frequently Asked
Questions
The answers to the most common questions patients ask about Neurostry, psychiatric care, telehealth, medications, insurance, and what to expect.
What is a psychiatric evaluation and how long does it take?
A psychiatric evaluation at Neurostry is a comprehensive 60–90 minute clinical interview conducted by our board-certified psychiatrist. We explore your current symptoms, mental health history, family history, medications, lifestyle, and goals. It is the foundation of your personalized treatment plan and can be done in-person or via telehealth.
How is Neurostry different from therapy or counseling?
Neurostry is a psychiatric practice, not a therapy practice. Psychiatrists are medical doctors who specialize in the diagnosis and medical treatment of mental health conditions including prescribing and managing psychiatric medications, conducting evaluations, and overseeing your overall psychiatric care. We work collaboratively with therapists and often coordinate care between providers.
Do I need a referral to book an appointment?
In most cases, no referral is needed. You can book directly through our website or by calling our office. However, some insurance plans require a referral for coverage; we recommend checking with your insurer before your first appointment. Our team can help you navigate this.
What insurance plans do you accept?
We accept most major commercial insurance plans, including Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna, United Healthcare, Humana, Optum, and Anthem. We also offer self-pay rates and can provide superbills for out-of-network reimbursement. Please contact our office to verify your specific plan before booking.
How soon can I get an appointment?
We prioritize timely access to care. New patient appointments are typically available within the same week or the following week. If you are in acute distress, please indicate this when booking and we will do our best to schedule you as quickly as possible. Telehealth availability is generally faster than in-person.
What should I bring to my first appointment?
Please bring a completed intake form (sent to you after booking), a list of your current medications and dosages, your insurance card and photo ID, notes about your symptoms and when they started, any previous psychiatric or medical records that are relevant, and a list of questions you’d like to discuss.
Will I definitely be prescribed medication?
Not necessarily. Medication is one tool among many in psychiatric care, and the decision to prescribe is always collaborative. Following your evaluation, we will discuss the full range of treatment options, including therapy referrals, lifestyle interventions, and psychiatric medications, and develop a plan that aligns with your goals, values, and clinical needs.
How often will I need follow-up appointments?
Follow-up frequency depends on your condition, treatment stage, and clinical needs. Typically, patients meet with the psychiatrist every 4–6 weeks when starting or adjusting medications and less frequently, every 2–3 months once stable on a treatment plan. We’ll determine the right schedule for you together.
Is everything I share completely confidential?
Yes. All information shared in your appointments is protected under HIPAA and standard medical confidentiality laws. We will never share your information without your written consent, except in legally mandated situations involving imminent risk of harm to yourself or others, and we would always discuss this with you first when possible.
Can I get a second opinion at Neurostry?
Absolutely. We welcome patients seeking a second opinion on a diagnosis, a medication regimen, or a treatment plan. We review your existing records thoroughly and provide our independent clinical assessment always with transparency and respect for your previous care providers.
